TO THE ELECTORS OF CITY OF AUCKLAND WEST. Fkllow Citizens,— A worthy son of an old colonist called on me yesterday morning to inquire whether I intended to be a candidate for my former seat in tlie Assembly for City West. He put the question, Jio »aid, because of having been told among other things, by one of the gentlemen in chaigo of a requisition, that 1 was nob likely to offer as a candidate for that district. My reply was of course a reference to my announcement in the newspapers. He was satisfied, and said he had informed the gentleman who had applied for bis signature that if the old mcmbeis chose to come forward he had no wish to see them displaced It appears, from tho published report in the New Zealand Herald of what took place at an interview with his Honor Mr. Gillies, that a "friend "of mine, a member of the deputation who presented the requisition to that gentleman, had been informed "that Mr. Williamson intended to cooio out for Newton." To avoid further misapprehension I wish you to know that such was never my intention, nor was it ever proposed to mo to cio so. And I further state to yen that it was not till after I was pressed to et my constituents know my intention with regard to City West that my announcement was addressed to you, and published on last Friday evening. I should also inform you that before the closing of the recent testion of Parliament a number of the members who had given a general support to the Government policy determined to resume the seat 3 in the Honje of Representatives, if their constitnents so willed it, in ordvr to assist the author of the policy to give effect to it. X was one of that number. We knew that a section of the House was much opposed to tho policy which we had «upported, and had laid plan* for its overthrow ; if that could not be accomplished, because of its popularity, that every effort should be made to wrest from the hands of the present Government the administration of it. Sigm of these designs are already manifest. For my own part the policy of last session has long been that of Imy own conviction*. The North Island must be opened up to the hands of industry, and tbat industry ». couraged by every mean* which a Government can employ, before we can hope to succeed and prosper, either in town or country. Local Industries must also be fostered ao that employment may be provided for the increasing town populations Seeing that the present Government aim at theie great objects, and that much collateral good otherwise is likely to flow to the province and city of Auckland from their measure*.
