In 1 the House, yesterday, the re3olutious moved by Mr. Macandrew as to the increase of the subsidy to the Californiaii Mail Service from ten thousand to twenty-five thousand, were carried with the following amendments :—: — 1. That the time between Auckland and Port Chalmers vi.l Wellington and Lyttelton shall not exceed one hundred hours. 2. The subsidy shall not exceed forty thousand yearly. 3. The Government not to contract to make payment for more than three years without ratification by the Assembly. 4. The forty thousand to include contributions by the Australian colonies. The Land Transfer Bill has been read a second time. Mr. Vogel made an effective speech on the San Francisco resolutions, and read a letter from Collie and Stewart. The letter showed that a branch hue to New Zealand was contemplated ; that the steamers on the main line would piss within 1,500 miles of Auckland, and that an Australasian subsidy of £80,009 would be required. The House unanimously affirmed the expediency of making a special New Zealand service, leaving the Australian colonies to join. Tho Winding-up Limited Liability Companies Bill Ims passed the Upper House, the amendments being withdrawn. Tho Harbour Boards Bill ha 3 passed the second reading by 31 to IS. Tho Submarine Telegraph Bill has been read a second time. The Gold Duties Bill his passed the committee with verbal amendments. Twentycarat gold is to pay a duty of half-a-crown. The amendments of the Legislative Council in tho Sales for Non-payment of Piates Bill will not be agreed to. Tho debate on the second reading of the Public Works and Immigration Bill is proceeding in Council.
