During yesterday a strong uorfucilv wind set m, accompanied with heavy squalls 01 ram. The flue barque Constance is announced to sail for Sydney to-day. The steamer which arnved in the Mannkau on Saturday last, and announced by one of our e\omng contempouines to be the Rangatira, was the &.&. Phol>c ictiuni'ig to the wharf, slic being unable to cross the bar owing to the heavy surf running. She was to have left yesterday, weather permitting. The ps. Comerang took her departure forlN'apier on Saturday afternoon last, and the p.s. Samson also sailed tho same afternoon for Whangaroi. ( The s.s. Lord Ashley, from Napier and Southern ports, 13 now due m this harbour ; and the s.s. Kangatira, fiom Wellington, Taranaki, and Whanganui, in the Manukan. The schooner Golden isle, fiom I'u^cll, arrived on Saturday last, with a cai"o ot 120 tons coal. The schooners Twilight and Colonist a\ ill both sail to-day, the former for ls.aipn.ia and the Colonist for the East Coa4. An official inquiry into the cause of tho fire on boaul the &hip Excelsior will be held to-day before the ooronor. Extinguishing Fmns ny Shtf-;.— With reference to an invention for extinguishing fires in ships, the Molbourno Trtnjrciph states :-_ .<< We perceive that an ingenious invention by Mr. Joseph Dyer for extinguishing fires in ships, which first appeared in our columns, haa been adopted and recommended in England by Captain F. S. Boulton, one of the surveyoi s at Lloyd s. Our reader-; may remember that Mr. Dyer pui posed to convert the pump tubes, vath which evei y ship is furnished, into °a pair of largo siphons by screwing on to tho top of them a, bout tube oalled a ' goose. Jneck,' which v, as to be pi olonged by suction hose until each tube reached the water on the outside of the ship. The theory is, that when the tube is filled with water and an oniice at the bottom of the pumpf tube is opened, a complete siphon will bo formed, and the extei lor v atcr will rush into the ship without r»uj mechanical agency. The plan received niurh apmoval when first published, ,ib it wab so simple and cheap. It was recommended to the consideration of Lloyd's Underwriter <? Association by the Melbourne J'.oaul of Underwriters, and Mr. Dyer registered it for a patent. He now finds to his surprise that one of Lloyd's surveyors has published it in London in the Mercantile and SMppinr/ Gcr.rttc as Ms own invention; but we are sine that many of our readers will remember that the idea was published in this journal months ago." A Divbolicvl Attempt.— Under this heading the X,'in York Herald of the 2Sfch May relates the following supposed atrocious attempt to fireave^el :—" The crime ehaigcd against a man named Lancje, a dealer in picture frames in this city, is one that should give him a pre-eminence in tho criminal catalogue for diabolical intent. He .shipped a box in April last on the Kew Orleans steamer, and secured an insurance on it of one thousand six hundred and fifty dollai % and the box proved to have been prepared with explosive and inflammable material, and was only prevented from burning the ship by the watchfulness and activity of the captain. In the box were vessels of alcohol, gasoline, and turpentine, and five was apparently to have been set to these by a chemical that would explode with slight friction. The friction was provided for by mice shut in a box, who, 111 gnawing their way out, were to fire the train that might have clestioycd the ship and all her company at sea. Here, then, j is, if the charge prove true, a man who deliberately contrives that awful calamity, fire, on a ship at sea— contrives the possible frightful death of twenty or thirty persons — to secure the small prize of sixteen hundred dollar insurance money. He should be tried by a jury of sea captains and sailors. It is a remarkable coincidence that this crime was attempted against the steamer George Washington, while some years since a crime of the same nature was contrived in the shipment of goods on the Mississippi steamer Martha Washington."
