The schooner Saucy Lass cleared yesterday for Napier, with 2 half -cases gum, 1 bale di apery, 25,000 shingles, 25,000 ft. timber. The a.s. Go-ahead and p.s. Samson both arrived yesterday from Russell, bringing several passengers and general cargoes. The p.s. Comorang was yesterday taken off the patent slip at the North Shore, where ahe has been for the last week or two receiving a thorough overhaul to her hull and machinery. She is > announced to leave for Napier this aft jrnoon. The barque ICatc passed the mail s.s. City of Melbourne, hence for Sydney, about 400 miles to the westward of the Three Kings. The s.s. Phoebe sailed for Southern Ports, from the Manukiu, yesterday afternoon. The ss. Lord Ashley, iroin Southern porl3, is due here to-day. Tlic 8 s. B lie left Charente on April 4, with a cargo of brandy, &c, for Melbourne and Sydney, and had vatuble and occasionally rough weather until off the Cape of Good Hope. Very heavy galea then set in, and on June 20, in latitude 3S S., while running under lower topsails, she was struck by a terrific squall from the N. W., which carried away the foretopgallant mast from the cross-trees, and the main and mizen topmasts close by the caps. Captain flichet certainly deserves all credit for working his vessel during the remainder of the voyage ia her 'disabled condition." Eoger.->'« Projectile Anchor. — The offici <1 experiments with this anchor took place on Tuos'lay <ifc Portsmouth, by order of the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty. The following are the results :—lst: — 1st shot : The anchor (from ship to the shore), weighing 1281b., was propelled a distance of 156 yards, by eight ounces of gunpowder, and carrying a rove line, by aid of which a 3^-inch rope was passed round satisfactorily. >Shot 2. Anchor, 12Slb. with block, was thrown into the sea from the shore with eight ounces of powder, and went a distance of 152 yards A. 3.|-iuch hawser was passed round, and the ship's launch was hauled fairly from the shcra with crew in, the crew not assisting in the launch, that being effected by shore aid only. The boat was hauled to within two yards of the anchoi, and did not strip it, thus proving its holding power. Shot 3. A cone weighing 401b. was propelled 163 yards by 8 ounces of powder, with double line. Shot 4. A cone, S4lb., was propelled a distance of 190 yards by 8 ounces of powder. Shot 5. The same cone and block were then propelled 217 yards with 12 ounces of powder. In all cases an inch line was used as a whip or small line.
