SPORTING ITEMS.

Admiral Rous writes to the Times, on the subject of betting, and takes up Sir J. Hawley's assertion " that it become a mere trade with most of its followers." The Admiral says:— "lt has always been a trade; from 1858 to 1868 it was a rattling trade, for one of my friends won £75,000 on a single race, and another friend £115,000. Last year, owing to death and default, it was diminished 50 per cent." Tt is absurd, Admiral Rous thinks, to imagine that the Jockey Club, or that any Government in a free country can abolish Betting, and, as there is more loose money in England than elsewhere, we wager on all subjects. A man can win £8,000 on a greyhound for the Waterloo Cup, and £150,000 on a horse for the Derby. This national weakness being admitted as incurable, the only sensible question is "How are we to ameliorate the system?" Admiral Rous says he has long foreseen that the evils of heavy betting will destroy the "turf. He proposes to make the minimum prizp £100, and adds, that if my person wins £30,000 on a single race, he shall forfeit the same to the informer, to be sued in her Majesty's Courts. If (a, com mittee of the Jockey Club' be- appointed' he will propose that if any member of the Jockey Club wins £50,000 on one race he shall be expelled.
