VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

A GENERAL meeting of the Auckland Rifle Volunteer Battalion was held, last night, for the purpose of considering the draft rules and regulations made in conformity with clause 20 of the Volunteer Act. The senior officer of the battalion, Captain Dei Tom, occupied the chair. There was a good attendance of members. The Secretary read the advertisement calling the meeting from the Daily Southern Cross, after which the draft rules were read, and considered. The rules, after a long discussion, were agreed to, and a resolution arrived at to forward them to the 0-overnor for signature. — Captain Derrom then vacated the chair for a short time, and Ensign Skinner took his place. — Captain Derrom. moved that a vote of thanks be given to Dr. John Campbell for the very handsome presents he has given to the corps to be fired for as prizes of honour, and that he be elected a life honorary member of the Auckland Rifle Volunteer Battalion, and ihat his appointment date from the time that he presented the prizes of honour to the battalion. — The resolution waa carried unanimously. — Ensign Skinner then vacated the chair, which was resumed by Captain Derrom. — The Chairman then referred to the letter which appeared in the Daily Southern Cro&s of yesterday, having reference to the " flagon " which is to be fired for during next month by the Auckland Rifle Volunteers, and signed " A Country Riiie Volunteer." He informed the meeting that the flagon was not obtained, as stated in the letter, from Dr. Campbell, but fronv Colo el Goie Browne pievions to his leaving the colony, after the Volunteers had done long duty at the Government House. He did not approve of the interference a3 shown in that letter by country Volunteers. Were they to do so much among their friends as they (the A.R. V.) had done in getting subscriptions and prizes to be fired for by their members, they would have less to complain of. Firth for ihe same. —A memorial to the members of the House of Assembly was then read from the Waiuku Volunteers praying for certain concessions to be granted to them, with a request that the Auckland Volunteeis should also sign the same. It was, after discussion, considered by the meeting advisable not to do so. — A letter was read from Mr. P. A. Philips, enclosing a sum of £2 25., half of which he intended to be applied as entiance money as an honorary member to No. 4 Company, and the other £ ' Is. to be devoted to the funds of the band. The intimation was received with applause, and it was resolved to express the thanks of the battalion for the donation presented. — A vote of th inks to the Chairman was passed, and the meeting separated. The members of No. 3 Company, A.R.V., at a meeting held on Monday evening, resolved, " That the Company pledge themselves to elect J. McCosli Clark, Esq , as captain, as soon us the resignation of Major Heaphy has been accepted by the Government." The following promotions were made : — Corporal Lepine to be sergeant, Corporal Edgerly to be sergeant, Private Tierney to be corporal, Private Eilgerly to be corporal, Private Thomas McEw.iu to be lanoecorporal.
