ANOTHER CASE OF DROWNING.
Information was received in. town, yast or daymorning, that a man had been drowned in Cox's Greek on Sunday night last._, Water Police- cons tables Cardigan and Harnett immediately proceeded in the -oolice boat to the pl?,ce of the accident, and brought the body to the dead house, where it now lies awaiting fche inquest, which will be held to-day. The body has been identified as that of an old pensioner named John Hannighan, whohas for a long time been living at the old Asylum at Oox'a Creek with anumber of other pensioneis. The following are the particulars that we have been able to earn of the. affair. It appears that, about four o'clock on Sunday afternoon, Hannighan called at the store of a man named Eidlmgs, fur one pennyworth of bread and tobacco, which he received, and then left, going over the hill in the' direction of the Asylum. At about eleven o'clock the same night, loud cries of " O\ my God," were heard proceeding from the creek, llidlinga t and his father, ad a Mr. Bennett, took a boat and went down the creek in the direction ironi which they had heard the cries proceeding. They searched till after midnight without finding any traces of the person who had called for assistance, and returned home. .\ little before daylight yesterday morning the three men a^aiu went to, the creek, and then found Hannighan fast in the mud up to his waist — dead. The body was so firmly fixed that, before it could be extracted, two stout ropes were broken. Ridlmgs came to town, and gave information, while the other two men took charge of the body. The supposition as to the cause of death is that Hannighan must have tried to cross the creek, it being at about 9 o'clock low water, andthat, having sunk bo deep in the mud, and being an old man, he had not sufficient strength to extricate himself. An inquest will be held at the Royal Hotel this afternoon at 2 o'clock.
