AUCKLAND LITERARY SOCIETY.
We publish below an account of tlie proceedings of the above Society iv reference to the admission of reporters to their meetings. This information, we may state, is furnished us by one of the members who was present on the occasion. Of course., the society have every right to keep their meetings private if they please : as far as the Auckland, people are concerned we do not suppose that any great loss of literary instruction will be felfi in consequence ; and, as far as we ourselves are concerned, a certain amount of labour, which we should probably have undertaken from the desire to assist any society likely to be useful to the cause of education, will bo very properly saved, Mr. Norman, jun., brought forward his motion at the meetmg, " That reporters be admitted to all the regular meetings of the Society. *' — This was seconded by Mr. Mulholland.— Mr. Eastwood, the President of the Society, objected most strenuously to the admission of reporters, affirming that reporters - had their S '.partialities," and that he himself had a very low estimate of the value of their reports. — Mr. Davis, jun., also opposed the admission, saying that at the literary entertainment in the City Hall, on the 27th May, the reporters had not been supplied with chairs, tables, brandy, and other" refreshments, and then look what notices had appeared in the papers the following morning. — Mr. Mulholland defended the Press, and gave the results of eight years' experience in a newspaper office. — Mr. Sinclair said he had been an Auckland reporter, and knew all their requirement?. When they came to a meetmg they expected a chair and a table, if convenient, but never any refreshment. With reference to the motion he he said the Society might safely pass it, for the reporters would be very idle when they came to the meetings. — The motion was negatived on a show of hands. Mr. Osmund Lewis occupied the chair, and was supported on the left by the Secretary and Mr. Busby. — [Communicated. ]
