-June 14: Two men have been drowned in attempting ■» to cross Lake Wanaka. — One hundred and thirty tons of stone from Houghan's-Heef, near Cromwell, have been crushed, and have yielded 2|oz. of retorted gold to the ton. — The Provincial Council has been prorogued. In his address, the Superintendent gave, expression to a conviction which he said had been long forced upon him, that the present system of Government, both General and Provincial, was unneoessaiily complex and costly. There was, he^thought, too much state about it, and some change was absolutely necessary, but no hasty ;-change should be made. The subject required due conskleration, and the new form of Government should emanate from tho intelligent - convictions of the people of the colony. — A private letter received by a gentleman in Nelson, from a well informed friend, states that, on the eve of the departure of the last mail from England, Sir George Grey left I London for Newark, to offer himself as a candidate to represent that borough in Parliament.
