POLICE COURT.-Friday. [Before Captain Daldy, J.P., Chairman, and A. Beetham, Esq., J.P.]
PilVNKINNESS.— Mary Jane Smith, Ellen McLean, and Bridget Ilawjiey were punished, for drunkenness. Henry Naysuith, for a. third offence, was fined 20s. and costs, with the alternative of 48 hours' imprisonment, and seven days additional. Thomas Brown, who added the offenoe of disorderly conduct to drunkenness, was fined 20a. and costs.
Robbery in Shortiand-street. — Joseph Smith was arraigned on two charges of larceny, from the premises of Mr. Probert, and also from the shop of Messrs. Winks and Hall ; the extend of the depreciations being estimated in eaph page at between £SQ and £100. — Mr. Inspector Broham asked for a rpmand, iii order that an accomplice of prisoner's might be brought up at the same time. — The case was accordingly remanded until Monday.
Breach of Merchant Shipping Act. — John B. Carey, charged by Captain Levack with wilfully damaging ship's stores, value IQ3., an hqard the barque ' Sclnehftllion,' pleaded not guilty. — Mr. .Ritchie appeared for prosecution, and Mr. Bennett for tb« defence. — Four witnesses were examined in fl'Qof of the offence, which consisted in blowing a wooden roller and pudding-tin oyerboari, — The prosecuting counsel stated thjit the oase was brought on account of prisoner's general bearing, and not for the value of the articles destroyed. — The Bench, remarked that when vessels came into port seamen appeared to think they could take the law into their own hands. It was necessary that a stop should be put to such conduct, and prisoner would be sentenced to seven days' imprisonment, The Court then rose,
