"SOCIETY FOR THE RELIEF OF NEGLECTED AND DESTITUTE. CHILDREN." Patron — His Excellency the Governor. President — The Right Rev. the Bishop -of Auckland. Vioe-Presidents— His Honor the Superin? tendent ; the Rev. J, T, W. Davies, M.A, Treasurer— G. W, Owen, Esq. THE Committee appointed to take steps to rescue neglected children in Auckland make the following statement and appeal for funds. From in enquiry ordered by his Honor the Superintendent, at the request of the Committee, information was obtained of some 50 boys and girla in the city; a large majority of whom are without parental control and care, one or other parent being either dead or in gaol, or having deserted their offspring. These are living, in many cases, with persona whose lives present the worst of possible examples to them. \ The Committee have unanimously agreed that nothing short of removing the children from the streets, and from their present residences, will be an effective remedy for the evil. An Act of the Legislature gives the necessary power to do this. , *~^ - The committee, therefore, recommend that two Industrial Schools should be established under the Act, one for girls and one for boys, and that both, if possible, should be in .the suburbs of Auckland. ; that, the children should be trained in industrial occupations, j the girla in those of the household, the boys in those of the garden or the farm ; and that they should in. due time be placed out in the families of. country settlers, so as to be entirely removed from the companions and in.fluences which now surround them. .^T-The coat of maintaining two such institu-i tions'will be considerable, and the Provincial Government c«nr afford no assistance before the- .Council meets.- In the meantime the Committee propose to make a commencement on a small soale with girls. A suitable building for temporary use has been promised, and the sum required for the first year's expenditure, for repairs, furnishing, maintenance! 4c, is about £350. The Committee urgently appeal for funds to commence the good work of reabuing at onoe some little girli.fr.om the life of sin and shame in which they, ardMipw being reared ; and, as the whole, question resolves itself into this, it remains to pe seen whether the public spirit of Auckland is equal to the occasion of providing the modest sum required, and whether one' of the _most humane and benevolent objects whioh-carf appeal to our sympathies shall receive the support of the community. Subscriptions and donations will be thankfully received by the Treasurer and Secretaries, and collectors will be authorised to seek assistance by ft house-to-house visitation. P. H. OORNFORD, ) Hon. ■ . E. GLANV1LLE, J Secretaries,
