TAURANGA: THE TELEGRAPH. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Tauranga, June 16.
A few days ago I visited the natives belonging to Te Matapihi, who are engaged in making a road of some magnitude across the deep swamps which lie near that settlement. It is marvellous to witness the engineering skill of the Maoris, and the rapidity with which they effect works that would confuse some of our clever engineers, with the rude appliances which they have at command. In the course of a few weeks we shall have a carriage road from Tauranga to Maketu, and from Maketu to the Hot Springs [inland. — Mr. Commissioner Clarke returned this afternoon, after an absence of eight days inland. I understand Mr. Clarke's visit has been attended with satisfactory results. Arrangements have been made by him with the Ara\ras residing at Rotorua, at once to commence the main inland road through the bush dhect to Tauranga. This arrangement will stimulate the Tauranga natives to take advantage of the terms offered by Mr. Clarke to the Ngatihokos. — Mr. Blake, Inspector of Telegraphs, has returned from Taupo with horses and bullocks for the telegraph service. — The cutter ' Stas^' arrived here on Sunday last, and the following morning went up to Oruamatua to land telegraph posts, Mr. McKenzie was compelled to charter the cutter ' .Nautilus,' Captain Stephens, who took them on board yesterday, and during the night went round with them, landing them in a few hours, and is now back again lying at anchor, awaiting a cargo of maize. Mr. Wrigley, the respected agent for the ' Tauranga,' issued a number of in vita' ions to the friends and supporters of the steamer; when about 1 p.m. this favourite vessel took from our shores about 50 ladies and gentlemen on a picnic to view Flat Island,
