"SOCIETY FOR THE RELTEF OF NEGLECTED AND DESTITUTE CHILDREN."
Patron — His Excellency the Governor. President — The Right Rev. the Bishop of Auckland. Vice-Presidents — His Honor the Superintendent ; the Rev. J. T. W. Davies, M.A. Treasurer — G. W. Owen, Esq.
I'TtHE Committee appointed to take steps 1. to rescue neglected children in Auckland make the following statement and appeal for funds. From in enquiry ordered by his Honor the Superintendent, at the request of the Committee, information was obtained of some 50 boys and girls in the city, a large majority of whom are without parental control and care, one or other parent being either dead or in gaol, or having deserted their offspring. These are living, in many cases, with persons whose lives present the worst of possible examples to them. The Committee have unanimously agreed that nothing ahort of removing the children from the streets, and from their present residences, will be an effective remedy for the evil. An Act of the Legislature gives the necessary power to do this. The committee, therefore, recommend that two Industrial Schools should be established under the Act, one fo girls and one for boys, and that both, if possible, should be in the suburbs of Auckland ; that the children should be trained in industrial occupations, the girls in those of the household, the boys in those of the garden or the farm ; and that they should in due time be placed out in the families of country settlers, so as to be entirely removed from the companions and in-, fluences which now surround them. The cost of maintaining two such institu-. tions will be considerable, and the Provincial Government can afford no assistance before the Council meets. In the meantime the Committee propose to make a commencement on a small scale with girls. A suitable building for temporary use ha3-been promised, and the sum required for the first year's expenditure, for repairs, furnishing, maintenance, &c, ia about £350. The Committee urgently ppeal for funds to commence the good work of rescuing at once some little girls from the life of sin and shame in which they are now being reared $ and, as the whole question resolves itself into this, it; remains to be seen whether the public spirit of Auckland is equal to the occasion of providing the modest sum required, and whether one of the most humane and benevolent objects which can appeal to our sympathies shall receive the support of the community. Subscriptions and donations will be thankfully received by the Treasurer and-Secretaries, and collectors will be authorised to seek assistance by a house-to-house visitation. . * " P. H.
