r AYe have Canterbury papers to the 9th. The Lyttelton Times of the 7th reports :—: — " The month has opened tip with some little activity ; transactions, however, are not extensive. Trade bills on the 4th were promptly met, and, .commercially speaking, confidence is entirely restored. An improved feeling has resulted in candles, which can now be placed at Is O^d to Is O^d ; kerosine maintains the recent advance, and. 3s 6d ia the present market value. The demand for cornsacks continues active ; for a parcel, I 14s to 143 3d ; trade lines are placed jat 14s Gd. Currants have been" entirely cleared out at sd. Spirits, of nearly -all descriptions, are meeting with an increased demand. Dark brandies very low in stock, while pale is quite equal to the requirements. Hennessy's ease brandy is almost out of first hands, and 29s to 29s 6d has been given for trade .-parcels. < The grain export continues active, several vessels having sailed during ""the week for the North with full cargoes. Large quantities of grain have been rejected, owing to the bad condition. Wheat continues at 3s to 3s 2d for usual deliveries. The demand for oats has somewhat improved, -owing to the small quantity that has recently 'come forward. Holders in store ask 2s 3d to 2s 4d ; but as purchasers can operate with, the farmers at 2s Id to 2s 2d, very few lines are quitted, as the margin given to buyers is -limited. No change can be noted in cheese ; the , supply and demand are almost equal. Prices remain at 6& to 7d, according 'to sample,''.- < • '•; '
