From our files we learn that " The Airedale, on arriving in port at 1.30 on the loth inst., on the way up the harbour I was boarded by Pilot Louden, and afterwards the health of the officers of the boat was proposed, Judge Ward availing himself of the opportunity of getting on board. At the flagstaff the Union Jack was displayed in honour of our distinguished visitor. " The Otaijo Daily Time* of the 16th instant, referring to this subject, says, "A decisive proof of the good effected by the dredging operations carried on in the harbour tor a length of time past, was afforded yesterday by the s.s. Airedale steaming up from Port Chalmers, and berthing alongside the Eattray- ; street Jetty. She left Port Chalmers at halfpast one o'clock, passed through Scotch. Pass j five minutes later, and arrived at the wharf at Dunedin at half-past two. Near Macandrew's Jetty she touched slightly, but with this exception the run up waa accomplished very successfully. The Airedale is 286 tons register, and ia the largest vessel that has ever reached Dunedin. Her draught of water yesterday was lift. Gin. She returns to Port Chalmers to-morrow afternoon, and it is to be hoped that nothing will occur to prevent her from coming up to Dunedin in future." The clipper schooner Jane Anderson, Captain Faulkner, left Dunedin in ballast for Kaiapoi on Tuesday last. Had head but moderate winds to Godley Heads ; put into Port Levy on Saturday; arrived and got over the Kaiapoi baron Sunday, at 4p.m. She is to take in a full cargo of grain from Callender, Newnham, and Co., for Auckland. — Lyttelton limes, April 18. New Training Ship for. Boys. — The Admiralty have consented to place at the disposal of the board of management of the Forest Gate District Schools the Goliath, one of the vessels now laid up at Sheerness, as a training Bhip for pauper boys. The Admiralty will fit up the vessel for 500 boys on the managers agreeing to pay £5,497. The managers have consented to the terms proposed, provided the vessel is guaranteed to be sound, and not likely to require any repairs at an early date. By the accommodation thus obtained, they will be spared ths necessity of a proposed enlargement of their school buildings, at a cost of about £25^000. The training ship will be moored off Northfleefc.
