LATEST THA MES NEWS. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) FLYING CLOUD.

Tuesday, G p.m. The twenty tons crushed at Souters for tliii claim aie now cleaning up, and th» amomit of haul amalgam from the ripples alone, exclusive of the stamper boxes, amalgamating barrel, and Chilean mill, is magnificent, being no less than 2730z. ldwt. WAIOTAHJ CHEEK.— GOLDEN AGE. From the No. 3 leader of the old Union Claim, in the low level, borne very good specimens have been brought to grass during the day, and the manager 13 sending down a few tons to the Criterion battery, as a test.

MANUKAU EXTENDED. This company have recommenced work, having been idle «mcc the formation into a company six months ago. They have a fine tunnel in at a low level, for a distance of 200 fecu, vlien they intersected a very good-looking lode, about ten inches thick, which by the surveyor's plan h set down as the Waitemata No. 1. It lias the same bearings, &c , as this well-known lode ; and as far as one can judge who knows the position, ice., of this lode, the people arc not tar out in their predictions, if it be not the actual one itself. The stone bears a strong resemblance m color and solidity. They are now engaged upon a small shaft close to the lode, and are down 50 feet, and are now prepaimg to drive, to cut it at a lower level, when stuff will be taken out and tried at the mill. If tins should turn out payable, and there is no reason to doubt it, as the colour is often got & toping, opening out the mine in a systematic manner will at once be carried on.

NONPAIIEIL. The new manager is energetically pushing forward the piospecting or main tunnel, whooe level is twenty foet below that of the TVarleniato,. The intention is to push this to the old shaft, which is sunk on the ridge of the hill, the whole distance being about 500 feet. The upper levol haa been in a very dirty condition, what with water and mullock ; but this will be cleared away in two or three days moie, when the manager intends breaking do"v n quartz from the lode from which the last ciushmg was made, and milled at the Cutenon.

WA ITEM ATA. I visited thia mine and minutely inspected the Tvorhings, &c , but, as the mining manager's monthly report will be issued tomorrow, it would bo unwise to anticipate it.

THRIEVE CASTLE. This company's mine has been at a stand for a week or two, owing to the non-pay-ment of calls, and, woise than that, they have been sued by merchants, who have supplied the requisite mining materials; but this afteinoon these every-day occurrences have been happily settled, and woik will be resumed the commencemont of next week. Smco my last visit the shaft has been carried dew n to the depth of 133 feet, and it u intended to push it to something like 200 feet. A level will then be pushed into the heart of the hill, but ib is expected, before down to this depth, they will cut the reef, t\ hich will then detei mine how they will proceed. At 103 feet a chamber has been opened out, and the Hand-m-Hand No. 2 dio»eup to this, and a communication has been effected by means of a fiume, which also served to carry off the water, by which this company were almost swamped out.

(rPiWI YESTERJDAY'b " THAMKS ADVERTJSEiI. ") The Erin's Hope : The crushing of 7 5 tons of stone from, the Erin's Hope, Coromandel, wa<s completed at Vickery's machine, Karaka, on Saturday, and yielded 19oz. 7dwb. of retoi ted gold, which only lost Sdw t. in the melting. Southern Pacific : This claim is a leasehold comprising an area of seven acres, situated in Punga Flat. The manager is taking out stone from the leader where the "Vale" party had to knock off. They have some six or eight tons of quartz out already, and expect that it will turn out returns equal to the " Vale," as the yield of gold was increasing as they advanced towards the centre of the range. The leader is from 12 inches to 18 inches thick, but at a lower level of 50 feet it is 2 feet G inches in Avnlth. The Batteries : This week again we have to report the crushing mills well and profitably employed, at least audi of them as have a sufhcient supply of that very requisite commodity — water. The machines genelally are contributing much towaids the gold returns, and many of them are ciushing largely from claims that until lately were little known. We aio glad to notice a healthy feeling of confidence that exists between machine proprietors and mine-owners, and the busmesa-like manner in which mines are woiked and crushing carried on augurs well for the season now setting in. Vickery's machine, on the Karaka, is ciushmg a lot of stone from the Golden Spur Claim, Hape Creek. There are five or six lots stacked around the machine, waiting their turn at the mill. Bull's battei y is at present cru&hing a parcel of trial stone from the Sheffield — another Hape Creek claim. The Young Australian and the Tarn 0' Shanter are waiting a turn. The Una Company's fine mill is fully employed for the company. The usual foitnightly cleaning up will take place on Saturday next. Souters machine has 10 stampers busily employed on Flying Cloud stone. The battery is well, and is again becoming a favourite with the public. The Waiotahi machine started a erushmg yesterday for the "Waitemata. The Manners' Reef still occupies five head of stampers and the concentrator. The Criterion battery is crushing a lot of stuff from the Peep o' Day, and will shortly resume crushing for the Shamrock. Weston's machine commenced crushing for the Alburma and Pride of the West Companies yesterday. The Hauraki battery is now crushing for the Mariners' Reef and Sons of Freedom. We understand that the crushing for the Manukau will take place at this machine. The Golden Crown machine is in full work for the uompany. The Tramway machine is idle at present for want of water. The Thames Crushing Company's machine was stopped a portion of yesterday, while the reservoir was being cleaned out. There are 30 head of stampers now at work —10 for the Whau, 10 for the City of Glasgow (Moanata iari), and 10 for Dixon'sNo. 1. The Victoria inachiue is crushing for the Moanataiari Company. The Whau battery is fully employed on the company's stuff. The Pioneer machine is still crushing stone from the Success. The Kuranui battery is, as usual, in full work. The large plant is fully employed for the Long Drive and Kuranui Companies, and the 6-itainper is crushing a lot for the Point Russell. The Tararu machine is crushing for the Sunbeam. Russell's battery is still crushing for the William the Conqueror, and will shortly commence crushing for the City of Dunedin.
