Witnegß to ngnature — Jackson Keddbll, A Justice of the Peace. DUKE OF EDINBURGH THEATRE.

S . February 9, 1869. IK,— ln your evening contemporary, the Star, appears so outrageous a libel upon my character and reputation that I am compelled to take {immediate notice of it, and can only do so by soliciting space in your columns to vindicate myself from the unfounded accusations mad« against ma in the above-named p*per. Your attention and that of the public has doubtless been drawn to the paragraph in question, namely, the notice under the head of " Duke of Edinburgh Theatre," in which it states that there was no performance at the abovo place last night in consequence of the proprietor not having paid the actors for their last week'i work. Sir, thi» literally takes away my breath. The whole of the people, with the one exception, were paid by me on the Saturday for their week's services ■ — a certain deduction being made in consequence of the bad houses during that $me ? but such' reducjaons being effected •jjdth their full pqnsent, and accepted by them aa a satisfactory' settlement pf fcheir glaims. ...... You will thus see hqw unjust a charge, has been brought against me by the paper in question ; and if the proprietors of the Star were seeking to effect the total wreck of my reputation they could not have pursued a more certain methpd to effeot that result. With them I have another course to pursue, which will be before the pubilc ere long, and in the meantime must remain content in thus defending myself from a statement as scandalous aa it is false, by setting the nbove facts before your readers. If the Star imagines it can shine by the publication of «ueh reports, founded either in ignorance or wilfulness, they have greatly mistaken the character of the people of Auckland, who, although stern judges, are fair and impartial ones, and lovers of the truth. I am, sir, Youra respectfully, J. W. KNIGHT, Proprietor Duke of Edinburgh Theatre.
