MR. LAMBERT AND HIS " M.A."

To the Editor of tho Daily Southern Cross. Sir —In Mr. Limbert'e letter in to-day 'ti i sue there is one poinb on which, ineommou with others, 1 would like to have further information, lie states that he received his degree of M.A. when 21 years of age. I was undei* ihe impression that the degree of M.A. at Cambridge could not ke obtained until three years after taking that of B. A. If 1 have beea in error, T shall beglad to be correctly informed; if I am right, I do not consider Mr. L.'a explanation U sufficient, seeing that he does not state when tbe B. A. degree was received. It occurred to me that Mr. Lambert might by mistake hare written "M.A." for "A. A." (Associate of Arts), which degree is granted at the local examinations to persona who may not be able to go into residence at the University. As regards the gentleman's laudable ambition to attain to cslebrity ia that noblest of all sciences, astronomy, I sincerely hope that his health will permit him to continue as he appeara to have begun. That a fielftiught woikih^ man may attain celebrity is evidenced in many and many an instonce. I njyself know of one gentleman, an Australian-born, Mr, Tobbntfc, jun., of Windsor, N.S. W,, who is a selftaught asfciouoruer, and is jußtly considered a veiy correct and scientific observer. He was at ona time, if I mistake not, offered the post of AssistantAstronomer at the Royal Observatory in Sydney. — I hare, Ac , Sidus. July 28, 1869.
