WEALING IN NEW ZEALAND. It ia remarkable that, while the whale-fisheiiea Hear the coast of New Zealand, are so exteusive as to induce companies iv America and other parts of the world to despatch, numerous vessels for the purpose of engaging in whale-fishing, none of the Btttlers of Auckland should have turned their attention to the uubject. The number of whales \thich are annually caught in the vicinity of our shores is immense, and yet the colony reaps ho further benefit from the fishedos than an occasional whaler calling iv for provisions. We should notice with pleasure any efforts to orgamse a whaling expedition in this city, and there be but little doubt that it would j>rovo <t remunerative undertaking. The Otago Daily Times of the 29fcli ult. gives the following account of the operations of a whaling company which baa recently been formed at that place : —"About three weeks ago a whaling company was Btarfced at Otago Heads, the plant consietmp ot two whaleboats and gear, one to be stationed at Waikouaiti and the other at the Heads, both being manned by Maoris under the leadership of George Robertson, a half-caste. It is to extend to a length of 450 feet, the first 100 feet to be built of stone, the remainder t° be built on pilfs driven in the beach. The work is set on foot by Mr. Robert Graham, and the contract taken by Messrs. A gentleman who has recently visited the scene of theo|,crationsiu Bowden's Bay for ruiainejthe steamer Taranaki informs us that during the past fortnight the divers have been busily employed clearing the decks of tin sunken vessel, which they have succeeded in doing without much inconvenience. The anchors and chains are ud, and only the masts are left standing. In raising one of the anchors, a slight mishap occmred, the rope by which it was being hauled up breaking just as they had brought it to the suiface, when it fell back again. The' divers have been down reaily one hour and a half at a time, but they consider tbe heaviest of their work now done. The two punts which loft here a fortnight since are placed in their position over the vessel, and they were to commence fastening them to the Taranaki on Monday last. A small piece of the catblock ha 1 ? been presentel to us which is nearly eaten away, and should the remainder of the woodwork of the vessel be in a similar state it will be entirely valueless.
