TARARU CREER.

In spite of tlie bad weather (and consequently bad roads) we hare had during the few weeks of winter, the various works in Tararu have made progrees beyond what might have been expected. The large battery of Messrs. Brown, Campbell, and Company, at the mouth of the creek, is nearly completed, and the manager has informed claimholders that he will be ready to receive stone by the 15th proximo. The j material for Mr. John Gibbons's new battery is being transported to the site of the machine, on the Golden Fleece bend, and the site is levelled and ready for the building. The large battery of Messrs. P. N. Russell and Company, at the junction of Tararu with Tinker's Gully, shows signs of progress. The building and the powerful waterwheel are almost completed, and the foundation for the stamper-boxes is in an advanced state. We believe the whole of the machinery arrived in Auckland by the last trip of the ' Hero,' so that there is not likely to be any delay in its erection. We understand that a proposition hap been mooted to continue the Government line of tramway up Tinker's Gully, or, if that concession cannot be obtained, to secure the right to construct a branch line of tramway by private enterprise. We believe that active measures will be taken at once, and there cannot be a doubt of the desirability of such an undertaking, or its ultimate success, considering the number of good claims in Tinker's Gully. Some new ground has recently been taken \ip at the head of the creek on which the Tower of London is situated ; and, although but a few weeks' work has been done, a first-rate reef has been opened, evidently a branch of the black reef, and a good prospect has been obtained from a trial crushing. We are informed that the shareholders of the John o'Groats Claim have come upon what they believe to be Dixon's No. 1 reef. It has been opened in a drive at 30 feet, and 75 feet from the surface, and some excellent specimens bave been taken out. They have a small parcel of stone to grass, and are sanguine of a successful crushing at an early date. The reef was struck on Friday last. Last week another cleaning up took place at Bleazard'a machine, of Dixon's JNo. 1 Btone, resulting in 180 ounces of gold. The battery is now stopped for want of stone, the road from the claim to the shoot having become impassable. The contract crushing will be resumed as soon as circumstances will permit. The Golden Age is crushing at Souters Battery, and the plates promise well for a good return. The parcel of stone from Chamberlins Island was commenced yesterday morning, but ■was not making any show — the stone is exceedingly hard. The Koyal Albert has two trial tons going through Souters one-stamper battery. A shaft is being sunk on the Crescent Claim, on the opposite sidejof the Moanataiari Creek to the Union and Dauntless, for the purpose of catching the latter's rich leader. The St. Lawrence leaders are being worked out for a crushing, and from the result of former trials, and the extent of the reef, good returns are expected.
