Considerable damage was done to the shipping in the harbour, and various places in the city also suffered. Nine or ton watermen's and pleasure boats were swamped afc their moorings. The schooner Jane AndersoDj with cargo and ready for sea, was blown from the old jetty to the .beach in front of the gas works, where she went aground, Tho Pioneer forced away one of the piles at the old jetty, the ballast lighter. Just in Time sank at her moorings and bad her boat smashed, and the old dredging machine drove until she brought up by the jetty. The new dredge was well moored, and held her ground. On shore the casualties were numerous, chimneys being, blown down, roofs taken off, and damage done in other wayp. At the Stuart-street jetfcy the schooner Pride, owner Captain Bain, was driven against the jetty and sunk. She now lies with several feet of water in her hold. This •ourae was' adopted, and the result is highly in favour of coal tar, its surface being covered with polyp; and other marine fauna, but the oxjdation ©f the iron has not proceeded to any extent, sod the surface of the tar i« unbroken.
