T « H^r B n? ht EcV ,' Dr ' Vi * rd ' Rom * n Catholic Bishop of WelhDgtpn, being about to leave for Earope by the [Kaikoura,' a public meeting of the inhabitants of Wellington was held on June 6, to testify their esteem for his Lordship. Amonjjst those present were his Honor Mr. Justice Johnrton, the Hon. the Premier, the Hon. the Postmasfrr-GeneraL his Honor the Superintendent, the Hon. John Johnston, &o. His Honor the Superintendent ocenpied the chair. An address was presented to his Lordship by Mr. Justice Johnston on behalf of the inhabitants of the city, of all creed., and suitably responded to. On Sunday, June 7, his Lordship preached a farewell sermon in St. Mary's Cathedral, and after the services addressess were presented from the clergy and laity of the Roman Catholic persuasion, and responded to by his Lordship, who was much affected. On the following day, an address was presented by the pupils of St. Mary's School, which wa* signed by about thirty-four of their number. Bishop Viard accompanied bv the Rev. Father TressaUet, embarked on board the 'Kaikoura on the Bth. The wharf was crowded with people wishing to take a last farewell, »nd three cheers were given as the boat with his Lordship left the wharf. OnJnne 4th« Rev. John GSw, the minister of the .Fresbytenau Church at Greymouth, received a welcome surprise in the sh» po of the gift of a purse containing bis coniyreeation. Mr. J. A. Bonar. in an able speech, mad© the presentation on behalf of the subscriber*. The Marlborovgh News of the 6th inst. states that the funeral of the Rev. Archibald Russell, Presbyterian minister of Blenheim (who died on the previous Tuesday aged 49, of diphtheria), took place on June 4th. About 150 persons testified their respect to deceased by following his remains to their last home. The service is to be conducted by the elders and others belonging to the congregation, and probably the Rev. Mr. Lee will be induced to assist ocoasionally until the arrival of the Rev. Mr. Souter, who i« daily expected. The foundation stone of the First Church (Pre^bv tenan) was laid on 801 l Hill, Dunedin, by the Yen. Dr. Burns, on May 29, ak noon. A soir6e in aid of the building fund of the new Wesleyan churcb, Stuart-street, was held in the Wesleyan church, Dowling-street, Dunedin, on June 2nd.
