PROVINCES.

Wiextraot the following from exohanges received yesterday from the Soutk by the s.«. ' Taranaki ' : - _ NELSON. i The Rev. Father Tre*allet has been chosen to accompany the Bight Rev. Bishop Vi»rd as hit chaplain, on his approaching visit to iome, for which destination his lordahip leaven by the next Panama mail. A deputation from the Catholicfl]of Nelson presented him with an address expressive of their warm appreciation of the seal, ability, and devotedaess with which he had fulfilled his duties as a priest during the five years of his sojourn in Nelnon. The aaaress also testified to the respect and affection so universally entertained towards the reverend gentleman by the Catholics of Nelson and the Waimeas, and after wishing him health to enjoy his visit to Europe, and asking for his prayers and remembrance at the feet of the Holy Father, conoluded by expressing a hope for his happy and speedy return. The address was accompanied by a well-lined purse of sovereigns, of which the deputation begged Father Tresallet's acceptance. We perceive from the Wts&and Olaerver, of the 27th ultimo, that a similar address and testimonial were presented to Father Tresallet on his leaving HokitUca, where he had successfully executed a very delicate and arduous mission during the late political disturbances in that part of the oolony. We understand that the Nelson Acclimatisation Society is in expectation of receiving a large consignment of English singing birds by the ' Gertrude, ' which will probably arrive at Wellington some time daring the current month. It is also, we believe, the intention of the Sooiety to send home' a considerable sum for the purchase of hares and partridges, to be transmitted to Nelson by a favourable opportunity in October next.— Evening Mail. A movement towards extending the boundaries of the County of Westland has been made, overtures to that effect being proposed to the inhabitants of Cobden and the surrounding neighbourhood, who, although in the Nelson province, send the whole of their supplies from Greymouth, and to all intents and purposes may be said to belong to a district of which they do not form a portion. The roof of Mr. Wilkie's residence, at the top of ColliDgwood-street, Nelson, took fire on June 3, but the flames which were bursting through it were speedily extinguished. Some currants grown and dried in Nelson, which are described, by a grocer who is considered a very oompstent judge in such matters, as the finest sample ha has ever seen, were recently left at the Evening Mail office.
