NEWTON REPRESENTATION. To the Editor of the Daily Southern Cross.

Snt,— There are already two would-be candidates in the field to represent the electors of this district in the Provincial Council. At present there is no vacancy that I am aware of for either of these aspiring candidates to fill ; but if rumour should be correct, and Mr. Rowe, one of our worthy members, be about to resign, it is quite time he deigned to notify the fact to the electors who placed him in tne Council, so that they may take some, steps to secure a fit and proper successor. In all probability there are men of stamp and ability who will come forward when they are certain there is a vacancy— to do so before is mere presumption. — I am, &c, A Newton Elector.

The Cape Argus of a recent date contains the following :— "Mr. David TenWs servant picked up yesterday morning on the beach, in the small bay near his house at Green Point, a bottle well corked, with the following enclosed, written on a slip of paper: > Ship Flora, in a tanking state. Captain drowned, firgf officer in charge. Sp ike the Fower of Yelleyofiß the g»pe.- JAMES 8A11.T.T." If you have talent and ambition, never look to your family to help you on in life. They will do all they can to keep you under ; but if you suoceed in rising, they will »U wwit to ltwd'on your shoulders.
