THE PUBLIC MEETING AT THE THAMES.

To th» Editor of th« dailtSocthbhit Cabss. S3, — As I perceive that very erroneous' statements hays been made with regard to your aocurate report; of the above, I may as well perhaps mention one or two circumstance! which' will tend to alter the opinions of unbelievers. On the night of the meeting 1 attended as representative of tha Evening Newt. There irere also present your representative, and a gentleman connected, J with, the Thames Advertiser. Mr. R. Matthewiiat at the reporter*' table as correspondent of the' Auckland Free Press, and, though repeatedly advised by me that, in his ignorance of a mining abdtence, h* would be much better occupied if'ne looked after his work, and let " stunkping" alone* he would persist in exhibiting himiei£ That he has been fairly, more than fairly, reported, may bo gathered from the following apeqjmen, of his real speech :— ' '',' " Mr. gentlemen, sir, I wish, yes, I with, sir, to ask, sir, whmt business has Mr. Carletotf, sir, hero to-night, sir." ' ' '» Therefore he has no cause of complaint* I would ad rise those, howerer, who have next to tarn his utterances into decent English, to print the teal thing at the same time.' As to' anything else that may be said upon the matter, I have simply to remark that tout report was almost "retbatun." The Advertiser 1 * is. a pretty fair resume", whilst that furnished to th& Auckland Free Press- literally •• bristled with falsehood*," to use the words of the Melbourne Argits.-±1 am. Ac., Johw- M. -Fiutßin. : To th» Bdltor of tb« Dxisr Boxraaaat> Caoss. Sir,— l hare joat ftevased «! letten signed u Your own Correspondent."' I do not wish to 'enter into a newspapdr controversy*— but must--<sbnfett my astonishmtnt at the language used by **«sVrar*wn Correspondent." He talks of my di«tarbi«g th« meeting, as if' l, like the rest of the people present, had 1 not a right- to address ;the' meetings AThe thing is utterly »b«n«l; i What was the use of tb« Thames Improvement' Committee calling* meeting unless it was free and open to) all present'to address it ? As to what be says regarding my «mendment» I adhere td my formw statement — I im^ftc., . ' i Biohaxd Matthews. Juno 10, 1888. P. . • ,■ . . u -.
