LICENSED VICTUALLERS.
To the Editor of the Daily Sotjthibn Cross. Sib,— An "Old Publican," writing in the Cross of the sth instant, complaint of the legal restrictions imposed by the Government upon the liquor trade, restrictions which are reducing unfortunate publicans to the conditionjof paupers. He goes on to say that the license fee is enormous. Now, Mr. Editor, suppose the license fee was to be reduced one-half, and all the applications granted, what would be the consequence? Assuredly an inorease of intemperance, an increase of crime, pauperism, and misery. It is said that the person who committed the di»bolioal murder atTodtnorden, recorded by the last mail, got his passions around by the whiskey which he drank at an inn, and also a flask containing the fearful poiioh was found upon hit pernon. It would be well to make the publicans responsible for, the crime committed, through the influence of the drink which they tell. , Publio opinion will soon, I have no doubt, restrict the liquor trade jto very much smaller dimensions, and it would be well for .society were the sale prohibited altogether. — T am, &c, Anti-Publioan, June 8, 1868.
