THE THAMES, MEETING. To the Editor of the Daily Southern Cross.

I Sot, —Mr. Matthews'p proceedings at, the meeting [last week" initiated the unseemly riot which then itook. place. I fl»y, notwithstanding that gentle-man's-denial of the 'correctness of my report, that ; " the putting of his motion was received with uproirious dissension, and the Chairman refused the repeated urgent entreaties of Mr. Matthewi to .allow it tobe withdrawn." This statement of Mr. Matthews comes with* very bad grace from the representative of the Free Press, who, instead of attending to his duties, disturbed a meeting the proceedings of which he was there to report. Ihe Free Press ignored, in their report, the last half of the meeting ; and made a latatement that, after the passing of a motion proposed in .the. middle of the proceedings bvnMr.- O'Keeffe for a vote of thanks to. Mr. 'Carleton, the meeting separated. This report is utterly unfounded i Mr. Matthews's amendment was put to the meeting by the Chairman, and received, as I reported, amid yells and hisses, which prevented a more f uU report having been reported by Your ovtn Cokbzspondent. Shortland, June 9, 1868.
