OUSTOM-HOTJSB STRBKT. A letter was read from Mr. David Nathan, calling the attention of the Board to the shocking state of the roadway and pathway in front of his briclt'storei in Custom-house-ttreet, in the occupation of Mr, Thomas Hnssell and others, and requesting that some repairs might be made forthwith. ' lief erred to the Streets Committee.

HOBSON-STREET. A letter from Mr. John Lock-wood stated that it was with extreme reluctance that he ventured * second time to call the attention of the Board to the state of Hobson-sfcreet in front of his premises, the Prince of Wales Hotel. He also stated that he felt sure an inspection of the street in that locality would convince the Board of the urgent necessity for immediate repair. .Referred to the Streets Committee. '

HANDCARTS AND EXPRKS3 DRIVERS. The following petition was also presented :—: — " Auckland, June 5. 1868. "To the Chairman of the City Board. ' " Sir, — We, the undermentioned, express driven of the city of Auckland, beg most respectfully to call your attention to the fact that there .are at present several hand-carts plying for hire in this city having no license to do so. We are therefore ' compelled,' for our own protection, to appeal to the Board to remedy the evil, as under the existing circumstances our business is materially damaged. Hoping the above will receive your favourable notice, I beg m >st respectfully to subscribe myself — Your obedient servant, "W. F. Ramsay, "On behalf of the express dtirera." Mr. Hill said there was no doubt that the parties did suffer in the way complained of. The Sxoritaby said the Aot had been amended so as to include "other vehicles," instead of "omnibuses, fee." . Mr. Hill wondered whether a wheelbarrow was intended. Mr. Eiitlkt propoied, Mr. Hill seconded, ani it -was carried, that the matter be referred to the solioitor to the Board for his opinion.

The Secretary reported that there was a attm of £540 9s. 93. to the credit of the Board in the tiank, after deducting the £300 paid to the Provincial Government; £248 ss. lid. was to he paid' to day, leaving a balance of £292 3s. lOd. KBPORT OTf THE STREETS COMMTFTBE. The report of the Streets Committee relative to certain proposed improvements was presented. It was agreed that the proposed repairs he carried out except those in Stanley and Wynyard-streets, estimates of wbioh should he first prepared.

THE ADDRESS TO HIS BOYAL HIGHNESS THE DUKI OF XDINBUBGH The illuminated address .which the Board bad originally undertaken to purchase, for the purpose of presenting it to his .Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, was laid on the table. The Chaibmak said, in consequence of, the abandonment by his Royal Highness of his projected visit to New Zealand, it would be necessary to alter the wording of the address from what was originally intended. , [ Mr. Hill submitted the draft of an Address,, which was approved of, and it was agreed that the address should be engrossed and signed by the Chairman, Mr. Webster.

INSPECTOR OF BUILDINGS. Sergeant J. Reilly, Inspector of Nuisances, was appointed Inspector of B dldings pro tern.

THE CELLAR OPENINGS. Mr. Hill said he had to call the attention of the Board to the fact that several parties were infringing the terms of the Building A ct, giving as a reason that be (Mr. Hill) was infringing the Act himself. The Secretary desired Mr. Hill to understand that the cellar-openings did not come under the Building Act. Mr. Bill said he would like to have an expression of opinion from the members as to whether or "not he should remove the cellar-opening. If it 'was the desire of the Board he would be quite willing to remove it • but he did not wish to do so because of the complaints of tbiee or four people whom Mr. Diddams bad found it necessary to press for payment of arrears of rates, and who blamed him (Mr. H ill) for it. No doubt his position in the Board was an eye■ore to these people, but so long as he was id -the Board he bad no desire to derive any private benefit from his public position. As he had said before, when he opened the cellar in Queen-street he did it innocently, and without any knowledge of the fact that he waa infringing the law. The Chairman said perhaps it would be better to wait until the vacancies in the Board had been filled up, before taking an expression of opinion on the question whether the cellar should be removed or not.

VICTOKIA.-STfiEET, DOG LICENSES, ETC. Mr. Geoegb moved, "That the footpath from Victoria-street in Victoria Quadraut to W.
