WELLINGTON PROVINCIAL COUNCIL. DEFEAT AND RESIGNATION OF THE EXECUTIVE

In consequence of the resolution of the Bouse dn June 2, that the Patent Slip Act should be read that day six months, the Executive placed their resignation in the hands of the Superintendent. Tbe Executive resigned on Wednesday afternoon, unanimously advising that Mr. Sunny, as the mover of tbe amendment, should be sent for and asked to form a Government. Mr. Bunny was immediately informed of the advice wbioh Mr. Borlase and his colleagues had given, but sufficient time had not elapsed to allow space for his waiting upon his Honor. In the event of a failure, we (Post) under* stand that Mr. Ludlam, as the seconder of the amendment, will be sent for. The following gentlemen were named as the probable Executive : — Mr. Bunny Provincial Secretary. Mr. Pbarazyn Provincial Treasurer. Mr. Izard Provincial Solicitor. Mr Hutchison, of Wbanganui, to be a member of the Executive without portfolio. The Independent of Thursday, June 4, thus, more correctly, we presume, describes the "situation :" — "In the course of yesterday forenoon the members of the Executive tendered their resignation to his Honor the Superintendent. Mr. Bunny was sent for, and explained that he would require some little time to make his arrangements. Be, howerer, was of opinion that in the course of to-day (Thursday) he would probably be enabled to inform his Honor definitely as to the result of his negotiations. This interview took place between 4 and S o'clock on Wednesday afternoon, and consequently Mr. Bunny had but little time left to see members, and ascertain who was disposed to join him. The statement which has appeared in the Evening Post of the probable new Ministry is almost entirely incorrect. Mr. Pharazyn, after the defeat of his resolution by Mr. Bunny's amendment, and after voting for the second reading of > the Patent Slip Bill, could not, of course, join that: gentleman in a new Cabinet. Mr. Izard is not to be the Provincial Solicitor — whoever may in future hold' that office ; but we believe Mr. Hutchison is likely, should a new Government be formed, to be one of its members, without a portfolio. Mr. Bunny's proposed plan is to have a Prorincial Solicitor who , is not a member of the Gonncil, but who' would ' become one of the Executive. The Government, if formed, would thus be composed of Mr. Bunny, as Provincial Secretary and Treasurer; somebody outside the Provincial Council as Provincial Solicitor; and a member of the Council as one of the Executive without office or pay. Mr. Allan and Mr. Buckley have been both mentioned in connection with the legal office." June 4. Mr. Bunny has been very acbive. Names of gentlemen with whom he con sill ted on the'subject were freely, but without much reason, spoken of as likely to join the honorable member. The difficulty, we understand, in Mr. Bunny's way is to be found lin getting a Provincial Solicitor— all the lawyers in town being more or less mixed up with the Patent Slip contract, past or present. Mr. Bunny, it is said, intends to bring in a bill to-night (Thursday) to repeal the clause in the Executive Act which makes a Provincial Solicitor a member of the Government. If the Council reject such a bill, he will give up bis attempt at the formation of an Executive, and the Superintendent will fall back upon Messrs. Halcombe, Brandon, and Pharazyn.— Wanganui Chronicle, June 6.
