THAMES GOLDFIELDS. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Shortland June 8

At a meeting held in Captain Butt's theatre, on Friday last, to forward the election of Mr. Swan, the matter was wholly taken out of the hands of Mr. Swan's personal friends. The diggers rushed the room, and, irrespective of the much-abused Thames Improvement Committee, appointed their own secretary and treasurer, after having, been informed of the, conditions on which Mr. Swan ' had consented to stand j the principal of which being the payment of all expenses, and the presentation of such a requisi- 1 tion as, Shortland and Tapu being appointed polling places, would make the return undoubted The Miners Committee again meb on Saturday afternoon, and divided the whole goldfield into districts ; issued the requisition ; and by the middle of this week we shall hear the result. When I visited Tapu Creek yesterday a requisition was being signed, by the miners of that district. There were 170 names pledged to support Mr. Swan. Mr. Buokland is absent from Shortland at present, no doubt feeling secure that his return is safe.
