POLICE COURT.— Tuesday. [Before T. Beckham, Esq., RM]

Drttnkabds.— J. Foster Hanlfcain, George Perry, and Maria (a coloured woman) were brought up charged with bring drunk. The two former were etch fined 55., or to suffer 24 hours' imprisonment, and the latter 10s., or 4$ hours'. Non-paymbnt of Citt Rates. — Mr. B. Newell and Mr. Kobert Gwynne were summoned for nonpayment of city rates due by thrm, amounting to £22 10*. — Mr. John Rhtehan appeared on behalf of the City Board, and Mr. T. B. Gillies on the part of the defendants. — Mr. Sheehan asked to hare the case postponed, as he had only just been instructed in the matter, in consequence of Mr. Wynn being too unwell to appear. Mr. T. B. Gillies objected to an adjournment unless the costs were paid. — Mr. Sheeban contented to the payment of coats, and added that he should like to have the cnse fully heard, as it was one of a peculiar character — differing from the general run of snch cases. — Mr. Gillies saw no peculiarity in the case at all ; unless it were peculiar from the fact of the wrong persons having been sued, and fmm being a gross attempt to impose upon people. The defence was that the wrong persons were sued — that their names bad been placed upon the books in the place of another who had not paid the rates. They were clearly not liable for the rates of Mr. Vialon. — After some further discussion, Mr. Sheehan consented to withdraw the case for the present, as he would wish Mr. Wynn to appear on the part of the .City Board as he was well instructed in the matter. — The Board was ordered to pay the costs, amounting to £3 16s. 4d. — Mr. J. G. Peabrook was summoned for non-payment of £2 Bs. 9d. city rates. While the case was being heard, defendant, who did not at first answer to his name, appeared in Court, and confessed judgment for the amount, saying be had just been round to the office of the City Board in order to pay the money. — Several other names were called over, but as the parties had either paid the money, or confessed judgment, the cases were struck out. Assault. — Elizabeth Burns was charged with assaulting the child of Eliza Powell.— Defendant pleaded not guilty. — The plaintiff deposed that on May 22nd defendant threw mud at her little boy. She did not see the assault, but when she came to the door the girl was running away, and her child came in to her screaming, with the mud on his face. — After hearing the evidence, his Worship ordered defendant to be fined Is. and to pay the costs — 15a. in all. The Court then rose.
