POLICE COURT.— Thursday. [Before T. Beckham, Esq., R.M.)
Drunkenness. — Joseph. McCormaok, John Wormall, George Leycock, and Ellen MoLean were severally punished for this offence.
Larceny. — John Clrne, aged 12 years, pleaded guilty to the charge of feloniously stealing from the schooner ' Albatross,' now in this harbour, ou the night of 11th inst , sereral articles of clothing valued at £1 lCs., the property of Captain James Braund.— The prisoner had been convicted at the Supreme Court on a charge of burglary, committed at Onehunga. — His Worship ordered the policeman in charge to ascertain if there was a turnkey in the gaol. If there was no turnkey in the pruon he would order that the Gaoler should flog the criminal. — At a later period of the day, Mr. Commissioner Naughton informed the Bench that up to 1866 there were turnkeys in the gaol, but at that time the rules were altered so that the keepers of the prison all became overseers or warders. — His Worship said he did not like to call upon the Acting-Gaoler to whip the boy. — Mr. Commissioner Naughton said there were three constables constantly on duty at the Stockade. — His Worship said ib was not his intention to have asked even the police to whip the prisoner, but the Bench was obliged to do so. The rules should be altered so that there should be at least one turnkey in the gaoJ, otherwise the 85th section of the Act could not be complied wich. He sentenced the prisoner to two months' imprisonment with hard labour, and ordered that he should be privately whipped at the Stockade by one of the three constables mentioned by the Commissioner as being on duty there. This concluded the business before the Court.
