A RUMOUR OF ANOTHER ATTEMPT TO ASSASSINATE PRINCE ALFRED.

The following appear* in a second edition of the Taranaki Herald .-— Herald office, April 11, 2 p.m. By the arrival of the s.s. 'Airedale,' we are placed in posseision of our exchanges through the courtesy of Mr. A. Tillotson, the purser, from which we gather the following 1 important intelligence :—: — The Nelson Colonist of the 10th instant says :— A singular and very ugly story of the persistent murderous intent on the life of Prince Alfred was brought by the s.o. ' Rakaia,' which left Sydney on Ist April. It appears that a man, a stranger, dressed in/ the uniform of one of the bandsmen of the ( Galatea,' was found on board the ship on the night of the 31t*t March or the morning of the Ist of April, armed with a loaded revolver and a bowie knife. He was handed over to the civil authorities. It is understood that the Prince was then on board. The solution of thi« circumstance is, that the villain had become acquainted with the bandsman in .visiting nn board the vessel, and on this occasion met him on shore, drugged and stripped him of his cl<jthe«, and aisumed both his dreia and character, with the view of repeating the attempt on the life of the Prince. We believe that a private letter to the Hon. Major Richardson narrates this story, which was also told, by the captain of the ' Rakaia.' This, Ino doubt, will account for the peremptory orders of the Commodore at Sydney, by whom the ' Galatea' h»s been sent home direct.
