THE UPPER THAMES NATIVES.
It was not anticipated, when his Excellency the Governor left Auckland for the Thames,, that ha would proceed up the river as far as Ohinemuri The decision to do ao was come to, we believe, because Mr. , Mackay was at Ohinemuri holding a meeting of natives of the Thames districtrT-both loyal, and , Kingite. We do not suppose that his Excellency exptcted to do more than pay a friendly visit to these people, and to create a favourable impression by his. assurances of a wish for peace. Of course he 'was welcomed by the loyal natives,/ and, by such* of the Hauhaus as were present, but mothin^ beyond the merest formalities was , uttered /by any of the natives. The real representatives, of the King in the Thames district did not show themselves. It is not likely than i^ny.im^ pression will be made on the organisation Cof the Kingites, by the meeting lielb! by- Mr^ Mackay or the hasty Msit of tht Governor. Pressure brought to bear upon the King party is as likely to keepjtf together ajjJx) break it asunder.' r * ' ' ' l^
