LATEST SOUTHEEN TELEGRAMS. RETURN OF THE BRIG 'AMHERST'— NO TRACES OF THE SHIP 'GENERAL GRANT FOUND.
Dttnidin, April 3. Thb brig « Amherst has returned to the Bluff f rom the Auckland Islands, without finding any tracei of the castaways, or the large cave into which the ill-fated < ship ( General Grant' is supposed to have drifted. I Traces of wreck and tome drift-wood were however ' seen on two points of rock. The officers of the brig state that the latitude and I longitude of all the islands have been taken, and i that, wonderful to relate, it was discovered that they I are laid- down on the charts as much as thirty-five | miles south of their true position. i Depdts of provisions, Ac, were left on the island*, which are reported to be admirably suited for penal settlement*. The steamer 'Southland' was not seen by the < 'Amherst.' ■ On Thursday evening a great fire broke out in Kaiikorai Valley near Dunedin, when a barn, store, and eight ataoks of corn, the property of Mr. Barr, M. P. 0., were totally destroyed. The property was jnofc insured, and the loss is estimated at £400. 1 A conference of the delegates from the County^ I Municipalities is now sitting, and the land endow- c jment, subsidies, &c., are to be discussed. 1 An influential public meeting has been oonvened fto be held for tbe purpose of urging on the Governiment the necessity of establishing a college in Dunedin;
