LEVEE AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

His Excellency the Governor, Sir George Ferguson 80wen,&.6.M.'G., held his first levee in Auckland, at Government Home, on Saturday, March 28. Those who "attended, who oould conveniently conform to the <I««al regulations, were in official dress, uniform, orwetfing'obifcume. Other. visitors were assembled in the dining-room and entrance-hall. A guard of honour, consisting of* '100 men of the 18th Royal Irish, were drawn up in line on the' lawn fronting Governmtnt House, and about the same number of the JRifle, Naval, and Artillery Volunteers, under the command of Major Tighe, Adjutant Commanding Militia and Volunteers, were stationed on the left. The band of tke 18th ftegitnanfc and alao the Volunteera'xband were in attendance, and performed choice selections, of music during the reception of visitors. r -. His Excellency the Governor, accompanied by Captain Young, A.D.C., and Mr. Algernon Lempntre; Private Secretary, entered the reception-room ' at two o'clock. > Lady Bo wen and tbe following, ladies were also preaent:— Mrs. J. Previous to the levee the venerable ohief Eruera Patnone — who, having wh?n a boy seen ths vessel of Captain Cook off the Bay of Inlands, is, believed to be about 106 years of age— was introduced to his Excellency, who converged for some time *ith the old man, through Mr. Gt. Brown, of the Civil Commissioner*' Office. The Governor referred to a book kept at Government House wherein the n»nies and other particulars about the principal chiefs are kept. He asked Patuone about Heke aud the, vrar in the North, and also as to the Maori King. He expressed his wish to see peace restored, and both races living on terms of amity. "Are you going back to Wellington ?" asked Patuone. " Yes, 1 shall have to go back by-and-by,'' was his Excellency's answer.
