LEVEE AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

His Excellency the Governor, Sir George Ferguson Bo wen, G.C.M.G., held his first levee in Auokland, at Government House, on last Saturday afternoon. Those who attended, who could conveniently conform to the usual regulations, were in official dress, uniform, or evening costume. The levee took place af two o'clock, but the members of the General Assembly, and other gentlemen who bad oards of entree, were assembled in (he drawing-room shortly before that hour. Other visitors were assembled in the dining-room and entrance-hall. A guard of honour, consisting of 100 men of the 18th Royal Irish, were drawn up in line on the lawn fronting Government House, and about the same number of the JEUfIV, Naval, and Artillery Volunteers, under the command of Major Tighe, Adjutant Commanding Militia and Volunteers, were stationed on the left. The band of the 18th Regiment and alao the Volunteers' band were in attendance, and performed ohoice selections of muuc during the reception of visitors. His Excellency the Governor, accompanied by Captain Young, A.D.C., and Mr. Algernon Lempriere, Private Secretary, entered the reception-room at two o'olock. Previous to the levee the venerable chief Eruera Patnone — who, having when a boy seen the vessel of Captain Cook off the Bay of Islands, is believed to be about 106 yean of age — was introduced to his Excellency, who conversed for some time with the old man, through Mr. G. Brown, of the Civil Commissioner*' Office. The Governor referred to a book kept at Government House wherein the names and other particulars about the prinoipil chiefs are kept. He asked Patuone about Heke and the war in the North, and also as to the Maori King. He expressed his wish to see peace restored, and both races living on terms of amity. "Are jou going back to Wellington ? " asked Patuone. " Yt§, 1 shall have to go back by-and-by," was his Excellency's answer. " Then," said Patuone, "how do your expect to do what you have been speaking about if you go down there where we cannot see you ? — But when this boy of the Queen's comes, I will snap him up and take bim off to the Bay of Islands." Captain Young, A.D.C., intimated that the visitors would be received by his Excellency in the following order:— l he clergy of the Church of England, the clergy of the Church of Rome, ministers of the Presbyterian Synod, ministers of the Wesleyan Conference, the clergy of other denominations, officers of the Royal Navy, officers of the army, officers of Militia and Volunteers, and other citizens.
