Charge of Barratry against the Ciptaik of thb Ship Sylbhidx.— ln* Brisbane •Courier says : •• On Monday, October 28, the Bntiih i>kip Sylphide, Captain Abel Blair, arrived iv Brisbane Roads from the South Sea Hands. Next dtf the captain called at the Custom-house to report hi* ship, but did not produce his clearance papers from the last port of entry. Mibs-quently » p»ragr»oh, which appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald of September 16, referring to an act of barratry on the part of Captain Abel Blair, of the British ship Sylphide, was brought under the notico of Mr. Alexander, Lloyd's agent in tbi* port, and Mr. W. Thornton, the collector of Customs. [The particular* have already appared in the Daily Southxby Ceoss.] Since she came here Captain Blair tells the following story to account for his presnce in Moreton Bay. He states that he left Chili bound for Liverpool, and succeeded in making Cape Horn. Off this point he met exceedingly b«d weather, and lost several spars and a quantity of gear, so that he ran for the South Sea . Islands to refit. He reached Tahiti, and while there he sold a portion of his cargo of grain, to supply the vessel with the rigging and gear wanted Finally he alleged that want of hands necessitated mg putting into Moreton Bay. The yarn is not a very comiitent one, and excited grave suspicions that all was not right, particularly when coupled with the circumstances of the want of clearance papers/ Pendingthereceiptof further information. Mr Thornton decided up.n taking mean* to prevent the ship leaving this port, if any disposition to do ho were shown by the captain. In the meantime. cnmoQunicationi were forwarded per telegraph to Sydney, and yesterday an answer was received per wire which led to a warrant being issued for the arrest of Captrfn Blair on a charge of piracy. On this Inspector Lloyd took Captain Blair into custody, and lodged him ia the lock-up. He was brought up before the Water Police Court on Friday, and was remanded for eight days, for .the production of evidence. Bail was applied for, and ref v* d. After the arrest of Captain Blair, Inspector Lloyd succeeded in securing some of the papers ' el<>nging to the ship, amongst which wasth* original register, whick contains the original captain and owner's name and alto the log-book."
