CAMBRIDGE. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) September 30.
Yoxtr contemporary, I see, io his account of the late match between the Cambridge Frontier Rifle Club and the Auckland Rifle Volunteers, erroneously styles the former the Cambridge Rifle Volunteers, according to which it would appear that the Club mustered pretty strong, and consequently had a good number to pick from to make up a team. Allow me«to inform you that the Club only musters 38 members at present. The Cambridge Frontier Rifle Club here requested a return match j the day fixed by the Club does not suit the Auckland Rifle Volunteers, viz., to-day; the Auckland Rifle Volunteers telegraphed to that effect, »nd also stated that they would fix the day. The ferryboat, by some means, on its way across the river, got adrift with the ferryman on board, who tried to run her ashore, but, finding the current too strong, jumped out and left the boat to its fate. It managed to get down below Pukerimu, where it has stuck f«st amongst some bushes, ho. ; a. large canoe is doing the work until such time as the boat ia brought back by the steamer. Mr. Robinson, who was appointed pound-keeper some time ago, was not until Saturday able to get the timber required for such purposes. He is now inviting tenders for its erection. Two or three of our settlera have received letters from their friends at the Thames, speaking very favourably of the richness of the quartz reefs there. A slight thunderstorm passed over yesterday and to-day, accompanied with heavy rain. The bridge on the Great South Road, between Walker's Gully and Ohaupo, is finished; it has a span of 60 feet. There ii every prospect of the crops turning out good. The storekeepers are looking forward anxiously for the 20th November, aa a Native Court is to be held on that date. The English mail arrived per <Bluenose on Thursday last.
