The rope which has been manufactured at the Kaiapoi Flax Works, and which has been the cause of tome discussion as compared with manila, is mado in the ordinary manner from flax, dressed by the ?rocess of which a detailed account was given in the *reM, of February 13, of the present year. After passing through the process referred to, the flax fibre is subjected to the hackling process, by which the long fibres are retained for the manufacturing of rope, the refuse finding a ready market at a low rate to upholsterers, it being a cheap substitute for the purposes of their trade. The whole of the hands at the rope manufactory are fully employed, though the flax-dressing maohinery is at a standstill for want of requisite repairs, which are in progress. At present, we believe, Meisrs. Jenkins, Jones, and Co. are engaged making rope to supply a Government contract, and to assist in distingushing this rope from any other a few red fibres are being manufactured in it, and mixed with the other. The rope walk is about 600 yards long, and the present machinery, -which is rather of a temporary nature, will no doubt soon give place tomore permanent erections for carrying on the manufacture. — Canterbury Prest. WhendoesanM.P. display most physical strength? — When he moves the house. Why is a gamut like a gambling-saloon ?— Because it's fall of sharps and flan. Why is a fast hone not a fine horse ?— Because he's » coarser (sooner).
