MONGONUI. LARGE ASSEMBLAGE OF NATIVES AT KAITAIA. LAND DISPUTE, AND EXPECTED COLLISION.
By the arrival of the schooner ' Ivanhoe' in harbour yesterday morning, from Mongonui, we have been placed in possession of the following intelligence. An unusually large gathering ot natives had taken place at Kaitaia, consequent on a dispute which nad arisen between two hapus as to the rightful ownership of a small piece of land, and a collision was supposed to be imminent at the time the ' Ivanhoe' left Mongonui. A leading chief resident at Te WhangaBay had put in an appearance with 375 followers, and a strong pa had been thrown up. The news of the engagement between the two hapus of the Ngapuhi tribe at the Bay of " Islands, as to the disputed ownership of land at Waimate, had reached Mongonui; but the numbers of Maoris killed was reduced to four.
