Recent Urge arrivals of goods, with a diminished demand, have oaused prises of all kinds of imports to recede, and business during the past month has been very limited. Stocks are heavy, nor do we see much prospect of their reduction while ship, ments continue to be so far in excess of our wants. Unless shippers use sound moderation they must expect to suffer ; and although, as yet, but few instances of forced sales have occurred, these sufficiently foreshadow what may be the result if shipments are forced into the market at the rate we are inclined to anticipate. At Mr. G. H. Vennell's sale to-day, ex ' Commodore' and ' Southern Cross,' duty-paid sperm candles realised from 13d to 13£ d ; corn sacks, 12s 6d per dozen ; woolpaoks, 101b., 3a 6d each ; crushed loaf sugar, £46 per ton ; lobsters, 9a 6d per dozen ; plate glass, 120x48, 2s 7d to 3s per foot ; sheeb glass, large sizes, 37s 6d to 60s per 100 feet ; cotton waste, 4d to 4£d per lb.; sheet lead, £27 per ton ; tobacco, in bond, 9d for fine negrohead j Hennessey's brandy, in case, 26a to 27s per case ; eagle brand negrohead, Is 6d to Is 8d; oavendish, 6d to 7£d per lb. ; Mauritius sugar, brown £30, yellow, £35 per ton. Imports, as a rule, barely cover cost and charges, and for some time to come it will be difficult to give reliable quotations. The price of corned butter advanced to Is 3d and Is4d per lb., at which rates several lots were quitted, and we believe that the bulk of the stocks on hand could have been cleared at the higher rate, as there were large orders on hand, but it was held back for Is 6d. Since then the price in Hokitika has gone down considerably, owing to the importations of New South Wales butter, and 12d to 12£ d is the highest figure that buyers are prepared to go to. Oats are coming in freely, and prices have receded, 3s 3d to 3s 6d being their present value for shipments. Wheat may be quoted at 4s to 43 3d for good samples, but the large stock of flour renders sales difficult at that figure. Chilian flour i8 difficult of sale at £12 per ton ; colonial, £12 10s. Money is said to be light, but as current bills are regularly met, we may consider the trade of the place to be in a healthy condition, in spite of the present depression. — Wellington Independent, May 7.
