Mr. Tra.vebli has retired from his candidature in the He»thcote election. Mr. Binnaway has consented to stand. A fire has occurred in Camp-street, Hokitika. A hrge block of buildings narrowly escaped destruction. , A new rush to the fiauhau has taken place which is turning out well. The news from the Buller is not so good as before. The 'Alhambra has arrived at Melbourne from Hokitika.
While a chemical lecturer was describing the nature of gas, an old lady anxiously inquired of it gentleman what he meant by oxy-ginand hydro-gin. " Why, madam," replied he, " they are nearly alike, only oxy-gin is pure gin, and hjdro-gin is gin and water."
