THE OTAHUHU MEETING AND RETRENCHMENT.

To the Editor of the Dailt Southern C»os«. Sir, — With reference to an adjourned meeting on the 2nd inst., held at Otahuhu, Mr. W. Buckland'a speech, as reported in the Daily Southern Cross, seemed a masterly state* ment, replete with plain practical sense — words redolent of graphic exposition and minute calculations. But while this is admitted, the best men are fallible, and it is a pity that oneso "cunning in fence" should go out of his way to lunge at any department for a purpose of getting up a case on which to pin the besom of sweeping retrenchment, therefrom wandering into the misty maze of inferences. Let Mr. B. speak out names and fear not, separating the honest men discharging their duty from those that shirk it, only satisfied in drawing their salaries. Let Mr. 8., if he merit the name of a reformer, put his shoulder to the wheel, by naming, regarding those that go to the office at 12 o'clock and leave at 4 o'clock, so as to separate the drones from the industrious bees. This would be a move in the right direction, and a gain to the State.— l am, &c, Observer.
