DUNEDIN.
Since the departure of the lust Suez mails, business has remained steady, but quiet, comparing favourably with the trade of the preceding poriod, but still wanting in animation and interest. Soarcely any speculative inquiry has been experienced ; the fine weather has delayed the setting in of the demand for winter supplies, consequently the transactions of magnitude which have occurred have been feir. Stocks of staple goods, though moving off slowly, have changed bands at well-maintained prices ; and a feeling of confidence in the prospect for future business has imparted a degree of firmness to the market for almost every important item. The imports during the month have been up to the average, comprising four heavy British cargoes, two cargoes of flour, one arrival from Foo-chow with teas, and two assorted American cargoes, respectively from Boston and New York. The intercolonial shipments hare been light, with every likelihood of continuing so fer the (present, Dunedin markets nob affording any inducement in any staple commodity which could be referred to. The shipment of the staple expert, wool, has been proceeding rapidly, but will not conclude with the present month. In all probability, the expectations formed, both as to the amount of the clip and as to tho quantity passing out of growers' hands before shipment, will be exceeded. The exports beyond the limits of the colony (otherwise than wools) have been inconsiderable j but the abundant harvest will, it is anticipated, leave the province in a position to despatch a large amount of produce as soon as markets at a distance are open. The present aspect of commerce is remarkably healthy ; credit is sound ; full confidence felt ; and reason for congratulation exists in the entire absence of mercantile casualties. The money market remains easy, and at unchanged rates. Exchanges close as follow i— Bankers' issue on London at sight, li per cent, premium; at thirty days', 1 per cent.; at sixty days', 4 per cent; on Melbourne, 4 per cent. ; on Sydney, 1 per cent., being the rates given last summary. — Daily Times, March 20.
