THE SUPERINTENDENCY.

To tlit Editor ot the DaAy Sgvthmin Gaob*. Sib, — A meeting of a semi-political character was held ut Otahuhu the day before yesterday. Its proceedings were attempted to be burked. Let the agents of that process answer for their conduct. They went there with the intention of stifling honest inquiry. When this intent became manifest, and was defeated, they pleaded guilty— they practically admitted that their favourite was a tool in their hands, and that, in consideration of his being elected Superintendent of the province of Auckland, they would not enforce their olaimi upon him during his tenure of office. How long is this condition of things to last? Are we to perpetuate political serfdom ? Where are the people? What are they about? Why the .reluctance exhibited at that meeting to broach; a question which iarolves the safety of the province? Mr. Buokland spared neither men nor facts. He looked the thing straight in the face, and did not hesitate to tell the truth. The province is deeply indebted to him already for doing that much, and itmight yet be indebted to him. No perion doubts that Mr. Williamson is sincere. Many have doubted his policy, and there can be no possible doubt, if his policy be continued (which it muit be by him if elected), that the province will come to ruin. His friends (save me from my friends) hare convinced us that in the present juncture, at any rate, he is not free enough to accept the position with advantage to the province, or with credit to himself; nor do we think his friends have acted wisely in endeavouring to obtain for him a salary for their own benefit. We want a public servant, a public benefactor, and not a drain on the public purie for the benefit of a few creditors. Thoae most aggrieved by bad legislation are the settlers. Let them find a remedy in a complete change of administration. If they do not, we warn them that they will suffer the penalty for neglect of their duties as citizens and electors. Tox PorvLi.
