QUEEN'S REDOUBT. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) November 10.

I am glad to tell you that this locality was by no means lacking in loyal efforts towards the celebration of the anniversary of the birthday of hia Koyal Highness the Prince of Wales, which would yesterday, of course, be observed throughout the length and breadth of her Majesty's dominions. Through the energy and liberality of the principal civilians and military at present quartered here, a series of sports were set on foot. These consisted of five foot races, walking on a pole placed over a stream, and a shooting match. The conditions were sixpence entry money for each race, and no single race to take place unless there were at least three entries for the same (the Ladies' Race of course excepted); and half-a-crown entrance for the shooting match, open to all comers, with rifles in any position, the prizes being five shillings, and half-a-crown for each of the races, a pig for walking over the pole, and a half and a fourth of the entrance money for the shooting match. The following is the programme, with the list of the successful competitors ':—: — Ist. Sack Race, distance 100 yards, 5 entries. 1. Private J. Sweeney. 2. Private Wm. Connell, 57th Regiment ' 2nd. Wheelbarrow Race, blindfolded, distance 100 yards, 6 entries. 1. Private Wm. Connell. 2. Private T. Mitchell, 57th Regiment. 3rd. Foot Race, distance 200 yards, 8 entries. 1. Mr. Phillimore. 2 Private J. McGlinn, 57th Regiment. 4th. Ladies' Race, distance 75 yards, 4 entries. sth. Three-legged Race, 150 yards, 5 entries, 1. Messrs. Etbridge and Phillimore. 2. Privates Dodds and Connell. 6th. Walking to the end of a pole and back, the pole being protruded 15 feet from the bank, and about 6 feet above the level of a stream not less than 7 feet in depth. Private J. Sweeney, 57th Regiment. 7th. Shooting Match, 2 rounds at 200 yards and 3at 300 yards, 17 entries. 1. Mr. Phillimore. 2. Private W. Dodds, 57th Regiment. The sports commenced at noon, and were maintained with great spirit and good humour until dusk ; "Aunt Sally," preceded by fife and drum, announcing the "opening of the ball" by a tour round the redoubt. The site of the amusements was in front of the Queen's Hotel, which was gaily festooned for the occasion, mine host of which, Mr. Porter, took a most active and leading part in the proceedings ; to whose 'exertions and usual obligingness and solicitude, an well as to those of all the parties who initiated or were.otherwise connected with the affair, the amenities of the day were not a little owing. The intervals between the races were chiefly occnpied in the usual attentions to Aunt Sally and one or tw o juvenile attempts at racing. I may mention that the referees were Mr. Denny, storekeeper, and Corporal H.Stott, 57th Eegiment; and the committee were Mr. Short, Sergeant Brinley, Royal Artillery, and private W. Dodds, 57th Regiment ; Sergeant Wolliscroft, of the same regiment, and one of those who initiated, the movement, rendering very valuable service. Since my last, our redoubt has changed occupants. On the sth a subaltern, 3 sergeants, 2 buglers, and 42 rank and file, 10th company 57th Regiment, arrived from Te Awamutu to relieve, both here and at the Bluff, a similar strength of G- Company of the same regiment, who left the following morning for garrison duty in Auckland, so that the force now here is not ireaker than it has been for several months past. J mention this, having observed some statements to the contrary. Mr. Denny's store here was, late last evening, broken into or entered, and I am informed that money and goods to the extent of about £20 were abstracted. No definite clue has as yet been obtained of the perpetrators of the burglary.
