TAMAKI POTTERY WORKS.
It is now about twelve months since the pottery works were commenced at the Tamaki by Mr. Thomas Spencer, since which time his business has increased to a large and unexpected extent. He has been constantly adding to the machinery for producing various descriptions of pottery ware. There are now manufactured, in large quantities, firebricks, pressed, roofing, flooring, and drain tiles, and every description of flowerpots. We were shown a quantity of these articles, at Otahuhu,on Monday last, by Mr. J. 11*11, and they certainly appeared to be good specimens of the fictile art. The fire-bricks seemed to be made from clay carefully tempered and strongly fired, and to be a superior article in point of hard* ncsa and durability. The tiles are made of finer and tougher material, of different shapes and excellent construction. The flower pots were beautiful in form and colour, compact and porous; and from their fineness of grain they resembled delfware fabricated from the crude material. There has been an extensive demand for drain tiles during the past winter, as a good deal of draining has been cariied on in the different farms in and around the district of Otahuhu, especially in East Tamaki, Papatoitoi, and Mangere. This pottery ware can be produced at a much cheaper rate than similar goods can be imported for, as the heavy freightage on such descriptions of articles must materially increase their cost to the purchaser. We are glad to uotice any improvement in this important department of our manufacturing industry, and we trust the proprietor of these works will receive a fair share of public support.
