Colonial Secretary's Office, Wellington, September 24, 1866. $i r> I have to acknowledge the receipt of your Honor's letter of the 22nd instant, in reply to mine of the 20fch, on the subject of a loan of £250,000 being raised for "the purpose of colonising tho confiscated lands in the Waikato. The information conveyed in your Honor* letter very seriously affeots thsqueition to be submitted to

decision of the Legislature, and, consequently, until the question has been decided, it is imperative that no further payment of any kind be made in connection with these lands, except in fulfilment of contracts already made, and that no further expenses or liabilities whatever be incuned, except in prosecuting the neoesiary surveys for military settlers. All other public worki or other sources of expenditure are to be suspended. I have to request that you will by the next m*il communicate to the above effect to the officers of the Provincial Government of Auckland. — I have, &c, E. W. Staffokd.
