RELIGIOUS MEMORANDA. [From August Ist to August 10th.]
On Sunday, August 5, a new Roman Catholic Church was opened by Bishop Pompallier, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland. The church is connected with the Convent of Mount St. Mary's. Bishop Selwyn has just visited the Waikato stations, at several of which he preached. Mr. S. Kempthorne delivered a lecture at St. Mary's School-room, Paraell, in the evening of August Btb, on India. The proceeds of the lecture ace to be devoted to the clearing off of the debt incurred by the parish in erecting a new school-room, and enlarging the pariah church. The Bishop of New Zealand presided, and a vote of thanks to the lecturer was moved by the Rev. Dr. Maun sell. A meeting of the parishioners of St. Matthew's parish wan held ou the evening of August Btb, for the purpose of presenting an address and testimonial to Mr. Jerome Cadman, who aided in the formation of the parish, and has rendered most important services as a parishioner, churchwarden, and a member of the Diocesan Synod. The presentation consisted of a very handsome timepiece bearing a suitable inscription.
